Differentiated Instruction Professional Development

Rationale For Substantial K-12 Differentiated Instruction Professional Development Plan: As a district our MEAP scores for our general population are quite good, however we need a lot of work with our subgroups. Based on what we have learned through AYP at RMS, we know that particular subgroups brought together when both RES & SHES subgroups merged together can and will prevent us from making AYP. Next year the new RES will feel that same impact that RMS has been feeling. Our struggling students therefore, in my opinion, emerge as our most important, critical need. Would it not be incredible to bring everyone K-12 to the same level of understanding as to how to develop and implement interventions which incorporate a strong differentiated approach! Would it not be incredible to develop a staff support system for assisting those teachers after they develop a better understanding but even more importantly to address the special needs of our kids in the Apex of our RTI building triangles! This Professional Development Plan can lay the ground work to everything that I want to get started on developing K-12 in our district. We are now Title I K-12. Every building over and over again states that we need to learn more about what interventions are most effective with our students. They also ask for assistance in delivery of those support systems. In addition, to these training, I envision that I will develop a better understanding of all programs and interventions K-12. I will meet on a regular basis with Title I and Special Ed. Personal to review and respond to data and shared results of effect interventional strategies, thus further developing their understanding too of the big and small intervention pictures, as well as raising achievement levels of our students grades K-12.

The Professional Development through ASCD is based on a Capacity Building Model. The steps are: 1) Whole Group 2) Teacher Leader Trainers - a Team for Each Building Site 3) Demonstrations in Classrooms.

1) Whole Group - The goal in whole group training is to get everyone in the district on the same page, develop a common vocabulary, a common set of understandings about differentiated instruction. Discuss what is happening in our classrooms concerning differentiated instruction and then what do we want to have happen in the future. At the end of the half day assign the group homework with a focus.
2) Training Teacher Leader Teams From All Buildings
3) Classroom Demonstrations- Modeling direct classroom applications with our students.

On-Going Sustainable Differentiated Instruction PD Goals & Objectives:

Here is what I am thinking:
1) March 4th - Train the District Trainers
2) March 5th - Whole Group - Train the entire staff K-12.
3) Next Year I would like for you to come back and demonstrate in the classroom
and work with our trainers again to lend them support and
redirection if needed in their building training efforts.
